ARCHAÏQUE

The Chilean duo composed by the Cárcamo brothers David (architect), and Abel (industrial designer), united to design Archaïque. This piece is made from two concepts: proportion and structure. As a starting point, they drew inspiration from the beauty and harmony of iconic works from remote times, where mathmaticians, sculptors, and architects studied the relation and proportionin their work to obtain equilibrium amongst geometric construction. The origin of such harmony lies in the aurea proportion (phi), also known as the Golden Ratio. This number has been synonym with universal perfection in diverse fields throughout time, including nature, architecture, art, and more. These concepts were used as building block, upon which the possibility of fabricating with different types of materials was possible. For this particular piece, metal was the material of choice. The Golden Ratio (1.6180...) is the essential element which allowes us to observe length and scale on our surroundings, and it takes us to a defined form as a study of a metric study. This ratio grants us infinite possibilities in the design of objects, furniture, sculptures, and even buildings. We combined our interest in this ratio directly with forms found in the architectural work Anacleto Angelini Innovation Center, designed by the Chilean architect and head of Elemental Studio, Alejandro Aravena (Pritzker prize winner-2016). Finding a pure geometry as an origin and showing two basic elements in a structure (pilar and beam), make up this particular piece, and also set up a future line of interior and exterior furniture pieces, made from different scales.

“Generating the structural limit between voids and unfinished unions creates the sensation of instability, weight, and sculptural perception.” Abel

”The idea was to conceive architectural scale as a cornerstone for creation of object and furniture design.” David
